RE: Memorial Day parade

Hi Michael and All,

Thanks for following up on this.  I was at Town Hall and asked Barbara about theirs.  She mentioned that AFD had one.  I didn't think to ask about the Community Center.  I don't recall seeing one recently.  Did you ask abou them?  (With all the events they have it would be great to get recycling going there too!)

I went into the Academy yesterday on their "Caretakers of the Earth" Enrichment Day and gave a National Wildlife Federation PowerPoint on Global Warming and what we can do about it (Energy Efficiency!!)  I had the students make posters for us to put up around town in conjunction with the NH Carbon Challenge presentation about energy efficiency, etc.  (Whenever I get it!?!)

Jim,  Two things from the last meeting (and a reminder to the rest of us) ... We're each submitting 10 energy tips (or recycling since there's an indirect energy savings) by May 5th via email.  So far, Michael Jackson is the only one submitting.  Also we're each inviting a guest that we think might be interested in what the EE Committee is doing with the hope that a couple more people might join!

We need to elect officers at the next meeting. It's important that we get everyone there to do so.  Please mark your calendars now for TUESDAY, MAY 13th in the Planning Office at Town Hall, 7pm.  If you're not there, you'll probably be elected!!

All,

I spoke with Fire Chief Michael Murphy about the Memorial Day parade. There will be a cookout after the parade. This year the parade is in the morning (10:30am).

I asked if the AFD recycles its cans and bottles and they do. They have a large sized bin from Waste Management for these goods. They are already planning to use these larger sized bins during the cookout. Chief Murphy said that we are more than welcome to put up a sign from our committee.

Energy tips

Here's some that I found...

Mike

Memorial Day parade

I spoke with Kevin Landry from the Atkinson Fire Department. He said that the Memorial Day parade is at 10am this year. He was unsure if the AFD was going to do their traditional cookout.

As far a recycling at the cookouts in the past….. I asked Kevin Landry if the AFD has recycled its cans and bottles from its past cookouts. He said he didn't think so.

I called Norkio, she is in Foxwoods with the Seniors. I called Patti Mangini and she is in Florida. I will ask both of these ladies tomorrow about more of the Memorial day events/times.

Lawrence Eagle Tribune article on recycling

Here is an article from the today's Lawrence Eagle Tribune on recycling.

Brochure aims to reverse recycling decline

By Penny Williams
Staff writer

HAMPSTEAD — The Solid Waste Committee wants to get the recycling word out to residents and they've found one way to do it.

The committee agreed to spend $535 to have 4,300 brochures printed and inserted into a free publication delivered to Hampstead homes.

The brochure covers information on curbside-trash and recycling pickup, Kent Farm Transfer Station information and what can be dropped off at the town garage.

Committee member Joe Tabi said it would be money well spent to get this information into the hands of every household in Hampstead. He said recycling numbers, for whatever reason, have been decreasing. He and the other members hope with more information, residents will be reverse the trend.

The committee also has solicited the help of Middle School students, under the guidance of teacher Kathe Cussen, to make a video about recycling.

In addition, committee member Bob Nugent suggested the Cable Committee be asked if they would make a video of recycling at the town garage and possibly even do a video of what goes on at the transfer station. These could all be aired on the town cable channel as well as used at events to get the message out.

RE: Monday's Meeting

Hello All:

I will be unable to attend Monday's meeting (out of state for business). Also, there are some interesting energy-related bills being debated in the Legislature that could help communities make a difference. I'll let you know if they survive and in what form... stay tuned.

Peace,

All,

I will be at the meeting on Monday.

I have a stack of brochures from the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) show in Boston.  Lots of good information, very expensive stuff.

Hi All,

Just a reminder (especially to me!) that we have a meeting on Monday at 7pm at the Town Hall.  I will bring my laptop, if anyone has 'energy minutes that they would like to share.  Also, I would like to share an overview from the NH Carbon Challenge presenters training that I attended on Saturday.  Please feel free to visit their website prior to the meeting, www.nhcarbonchallenge.org and take the challenge.  It's all about saving energy.  I'd like to see Atkinson make the list!!  I'm hoping Michael will also share his visit to the Green expo in Boston with us.

I have attached last month's minutes to remind each of us of our to-do lists.

See you on Monday!

Michelle

Roadside Clean-up

Atkinson's roadside clean-up will be on April 19th.  Patti and Noriko will hand out bags and t-shirts from 8 - 10 am at the Community Center.
Clean-up can be done anytime during the week.  They usually ask you to sign up for a road or section of a road.  They also forms for students who need to show evidence of community service work.

Please pass the word along (friends, youth groups, organizations you belong to, etc.) - it would be great to have lots of people out to make a statement that we care about our town!

I wanted to forward this to everyone.  I was unable to attend the last meeting of the Rockingham/Strafford Energy Alliance due to a family funeral in Nebraska last week.  I will; however be attending the Climate Champion Training on Saturday.  If anyone else is interested, this seminar series is designed to train others in reaching out to encourage positive change and does not dwell on the negatives of global warming.  I work with the Carbon Challenge professionally and they are dynamic group to partner with.  This training encourages presenters to work with partners to present to make the presentation more interesting.  I do not have a partner - would be great to do some presentations locally!  Let me know if you're interested and I'll contact the director.

They are also looking for local energy committees to add a page to Rockingham/Strafford wiki site.  Anyone interested?

Finally, we will hold our April meeting on Monday, the 14th at 7pm at the Town Hall.  I'm marking it on my calendar now (are you?) and will send out a reminder at the end of next week.

Rockingham Strafford Alliance

The third quarterly meeting of the Rockingham Strafford Energy Committee Alliance was held at the Alumni Center at UNH on 3/26.  The first half of the meeting consisted of relevant committee announcements and presentations on the importance and means of using community outreach in garnering support for energy committee actions.

Featured were presentations on best practices for outreach and a student outreach program conducted by the Rye Energy Committee.

The second half of the meeting was an experiment in break out groups on several essential committee topics.  Members from numerous committees across NH  (including Bethlehem and Franconia!) broke into groups on 1) committee formation and implementation 2) ordinances and planning issues 3) conducting town inventories and benchmarking 4) hands-on training on the wiki site.  Each subgroup was tasked with developing goals, highlighting barriers and defining needs for each action goal. This process will be driven forward between meetings via email with the objective of collectively developing workable plans for our individual LECs.  We will be posting results and action items on the wiki site, nhenergy.org

News on the NH Climate Policy Task Force

Citizen Connections

Let the task force know your community priorities and needs.

Several of the citizen leaders on the Climate Policy Task Force and its six working groups are citizens who brought the NH Climate Change Resolution to their 2007 Town Meeting.  Today the Task Force includes Local Energy Committee representatives.

Take advantage of your citizen connection with the members of the Climate Policy Task Force by making direct recommendations to the citizens who comprise the various Task Force Working Groups.  On September 1st, the Task Force will submit a Climate Action Plan for New Hampshire to the Governor.

The six Task Force Working Groups:

  1. Electric Generation and Usage (EGU)
  2. Transportation and Land Use (TSU)
  3. Residential, Commercial, and Industrial (RCI)
  4. Agriculture, Forestry, and Waste (AFW)
  5. Government, Leadership, and Action (GLA)
  6. Adaptation (ADP)

New on the Wiki

Each Town Energy Committee should create its own NH Community Wiki page.  It is the easiest way for energy committees to share project ideas, experiences, and contact information.  Check out this interesting project from the town of Plymouth:

"The Plymouth Energy Committee will sponsor a session for municipal officials on the basics of greenbuilding and why this approach should be endorsed for all municipal renovations and new construction projects. The meeting will take place on May 19, 2008. Paul Leveille of the Jordan Institute will speak. The intent of this evening session will be to get local officials and department heads to understand why this approach makes sense financially, operationally, and environmentally and what tools are available to assist them with the process. Then to work toward a municipal policy requiring green building as the standard for town owned projects. The library is likely to be the next structure to design an addition and has expressed some interest in green building techniques in the past."

Great work Plymouth!

The Energy Committee Advisory Group is also putting together some dates and locations to hold Wiki training sessions at regionally specific locations throughout the state. The dates and locations will be posted on the wiki calendar  and current events page as soon as they are finalized.
