In keeping with the spirit and intent of New Hampshire's Right-to-Know Law RSA 91-A, this blog is simply a repository of communications related to the Atkinson Energy Efficiency Committee. It will include copies of emails between members, meeting minutes of public meetings, and other documents which the Committee feels should be available to the public.

FW: Local Energy Committee News

I wanted to forward this to everyone.  I was unable to attend the last meeting of the Rockingham/Strafford Energy Alliance due to a family funeral in Nebraska last week.  I will; however be attending the Climate Champion Training on Saturday.  If anyone else is interested, this seminar series is designed to train others in reaching out to encourage positive change and does not dwell on the negatives of global warming.  I work with the Carbon Challenge professionally and they are dynamic group to partner with.  This training encourages presenters to work with partners to present to make the presentation more interesting.  I do not have a partner - would be great to do some presentations locally!  Let me know if you're interested and I'll contact the director.
 
They are also looking for local energy committees to add a page to Rockingham/Strafford wiki site.  Anyone interested?
 
Finally, we will hold our April meeting on Monday, the 14th at 7pm at the Town Hall.  I'm marking it on my calendar now (are you?) and will send out a reminder at the end of next week.

Climate Champion Training Series - Workshop #1
 
This is the first of a new series of pilot trainings to provide interested citizens and Local NH Energy Committees with the training, resources and support they need to build climate change awareness and leverage it to foster the adoption of low carbon lifestyles.
 
Workshop - April 5, 2008  8:00am - 4:30pm at the Hugh Gregg Coastal Conservation Center, Greenland, NH
 
This 1-DAY workshop will introduce attendees to the NH Carbon Challenge program and prepare them with effective communication techniques on climate change science and solutions. Through instruction in public speaking and effective use of technology, participants will be prepared to empower residents to take personal action to reduce energy use in their own homes.

Rockingham Strafford Alliance
 
The third quarterly meeting of the Rockingham Strafford Energy Committee Alliance was held at the Alumni Center at UNH on 3/26.  The first half of the meeting consisted of relevant committee announcements and presentations on the importance and means of using community outreach in garnering support for energy committee actions. 
 
Featured were presentations on best practices for outreach and a student outreach program conducted by the Rye Energy Committee.
 
The second half of the meeting was an experiment in break out groups on several essential committee topics.  Members from numerous committees across NH  (including Bethlehem and Franconia!) broke into groups on 1) committee formation and implementation 2) ordinances and planning issues 3) conducting town inventories and benchmarking 4) hands-on training on the wiki site.  Each subgroup was tasked with developing goals, highlighting barriers and defining needs for each action goal. This process will be driven forward between meetings via email with the objective of collectively developing workable plans for our individual LECs.  We will be posting results and action items on the wiki site, nhenergy.org.

The Lincoln Energy Committee worked with the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative to conduct an extensive municipal energy audit.  Read about the results and recommendations of the audit in the March 12th story from The Littleton Courier.
 
News on the NH Climate Policy Task Force

Citizen Connections
 
Let the task force know your community priorities and needs.
 
Several of the citizen leaders on the Climate Policy Task Force and its six working groups are citizens who brought the NH Climate Change Resolution to their 2007 Town Meeting.  Today the Task Force includes Local Energy Committee representatives.
 
Take advantage of your citizen connection with the members of the Climate Policy Task Force by making direct recommendations to the citizens who comprise the various Task Force Working Groups.  On September 1st, the Task Force will submit a Climate Action Plan for New Hampshire to the Governor.
 
The six Task Force Working Groups:
  1. Electric Generation and Usage (EGU)
  2. Transportation and Land Use (TSU)
  3. Residential, Commercial, and Industrial (RCI)
  4. Agriculture, Forestry, and Waste (AFW) 
  5. Government, Leadership, and Action (GLA)
  6. Adaptation (ADP)

Each Town Energy Committee should create its own NH Community Wiki page.  It is the easiest way for energy committees to share project ideas, experiences, and contact information.  Check out this interesting project from the town of Plymouth:
 
"The Plymouth Energy Committee will sponsor a session for municipal officials on the basics of greenbuilding and why this approach should be endorsed for all municipal renovations and new construction projects. The meeting will take place on May 19, 2008. Paul Leveille of the Jordan Institute will speak. The intent of this evening session will be to get local officials and department heads to understand why this approach makes sense financially, operationally, and environmentally and what tools are available to assist them with the process. Then to work toward a municipal policy requiring green building as the standard for town owned projects. The library is likely to be the next structure to design an addition and has expressed some interest in green building techniques in the past."

The Energy Committee Advisory Group is also putting together some dates and locations to hold Wiki training sessions at regionally specific locations throughout the state. The dates and locations will be posted on the wiki calendar  and current events page as soon as they are finalized.

Portsmouth Listens Sustainability Fair

Hi Everyone,
 
Portsmouth is holding a Sustainability Fair on Saturday, April 19th.  Early details at http://portsmouthlistens.org/  Think is would be a great event for members to attend to look for ideas/vendors for future events in Atkinson.  I, the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program, will be participating in the fair with a table or a presentation - haven't decided yet.
